Specials at Saint Mary

Specials classes at Saint Mary School are an essential part of educating the whole child. Specials classes help our students to develop physically, exercise their creativity, explore disciplines beyond their core classes, and apply their learning in real-life situations. Saint Mary School is unique in that it offers both Spanish and STEM to students beginning in Preschool.

Students create, perform, respond and connect to music in meaningful and developmentally appropriate ways, discovering, exploring and experiencing sacred music from our Catholic heritage as well as secular music spanning many cultures and genres.

Spanish is taught from preschool through 8th grade. Students develop their language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing through the Spanish curriculum. Material is presented through songs, games, conversations, books and other classroom and computer activities.The best way to learn a language is by using it as much as possible as practice does make perfect in foreign language learning. Many Saint Mary graduates enter high school honors-level Spanish.

The Saint Mary STEM program is a hands-on, integrated approach to teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics through hands-on, project-based learning that fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It focuses on connecting classroom concepts to real-world applications. The goal is to excite students about these subjects, develop crucial 21st-century skills, and encourage creativity and collaboration.

My favorite part of SMS is seeing students light up when their ideas come to life, and my greatest hope is that they leave my class confident in their ability to think critically, take risks, and solve real-world problems.
